In a country where women’s ‘terrible’ driving skills are a butt of innumerable jokes across social media platforms bolstered by comments like “Bahaha, so true!!!”, we have a team of 12 brilliant girls with indomitable spirits to debunk all such baseless stereotypes.
Team Panthera, comprising of 12 dedicated B.tech students from Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women, has cleared the first phase of Shell Eco Marathon, Asia, which is to be held in Philippines in 2016.
The Shell Eco Marathon is a prestigious international competition which requires students from all across Asia to design and fabricate a super mileage vehicle, which is then tested and judged on various parameters. This competition not only promotes innovation and research among students, but also aims at providing a solution to the current global environmental crisis through the adoption of alternate energy sources. It is worthy noting that team Panthera is the only all-girls team that has made it’s cut to the second phase of the competition.
Indira Gandhi Technical University has been participating in the competition for the past four years, and the training and design formulation has evolved into a legacy that is passed down from the seniors every year. The design which is improved upon every year was recognized as one of the top 24 innovations by theEconomics Times in 2013.
The team zeroed down on the name team Panthera, the scientific nomenclature for the Royal Bengal Tiger, due to its symbolic of fierceness, strength, speed, precision and efficiency- all the values that the team is striving for its design to embody. Team Panthera has also collaborated with the Lean-In global online community for women, to help them polish the soft skills that are a pre-requisite for making a splash in a competition of such prodigious magnitude.
The competition requires for rigorous market surveys and extensive on-the-field research. Team Panthera, whose dedication combats all sorts of deterrents, has also faced discrimination on the grounds of being ‘all girls’.
